A Bit of Club History

Early golfers played at the game for many years without any thought of forming a society or club until finally a group of Edinburgh golfers in 1744 formed a club called the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. At this time, the first rules of golf, 13 in all, were drawn up for an annual competition between sportsmen from any part of Great Britain and Ireland. A few years later the Society of St Andrews Golfers was formed and in 1834, when King William IV became the Society's patron, the title was changed to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

Pitting your skill against the course and comparing that result to those of others endeavoring to do the same thing must certainly lie somewhere in the curved helix that is the DNA of golfers. Probing every square inch of the area that is McNary Golf Club, and some a bit beyond, men have put themselves into the breach to charge ass backwards into some carbon fiber future in pursuit of par. So it is the McNary Men’s Golf Club began life shortly after the opening of the course in the spring of 1962. The following is a bit of the history of that charge.

Golf is the cruelest of sports. Like life, it's unfair. It's a harlot. A trollop. It leads you on. It never lives up to its promises.... It's a boulevard of broken dreams. It plays with men. And runs off with the butcher.
